  Moine Mhòr

  The Great Moss.

The Moine Mhòr is an ancient peat bog and is a National Nature Reserve since 1987. It is now the only example left in Britain of a landscape that changes from saltmarsh close to the sea, through freshwater peat bog, to woodland and hillside vegetation.

View from Islandadd Bridge The Great Moss

The bog, its waterways and the neighbouring woods are home to a wide variety of birds, mammals and insects. Hen harriers, curlews, whinchats, stonechats, meadow and tree pipits are all present, as well as roe deer and otters. The nationally rare large heath butterfly may also be seen.
Climb the nearby Dunadd Hill for wide views of the Moss, or follow the self-guided Tileworks Trail for a closer experience!
