  The Crinan Canal

The most beautiful shortcut in the world.

Originally built between 1794 and 1801 by Scottish engineer John Rennie, the canal cuts across the neck of the Kintyre peninsula, connecting Ardrishaig to Crinan. Once a busy shipping route to the west coast and the islands, today it is mainly used by yachts and other pleasure craft.

Crinan Canal View from Crinan

It is only nine miles long, but there's plenty to see along the way, from the spectacular views over the Sound of Jura and the Moine Mhòr to the lock flights at Cairnbaan and Dunardry and the colourful basin at Crinan.
A walk along the towpath is highly recommended: you will not be disappointed!
